Green Eurostar
With environmental issues high on the global agenda and increasing pressures on airlines to reduce their number of long-haul and low-cost flights it is important that Eurostar is doing its bit to be green.
Eurostar has commissioned research that proves that travelling by Eurostar is much greener than flying.
The research, conducted by Paul Watkiss Associates and AEA Technology Environment, shows that flying between London and Paris or Brussels generates ten times more carbon dioxide emissions than travelling by Eurostar train.
The study analysed data on power station, aircraft and engine emissions, transmission losses and electricity supplies in carrying out the research. The results show that whilst a return flight produces enough CO2 to fill a double-decker bus, the CO2 emitted from a return rail trip would only fill a Mini.
The future for Eurostar also looks greener. The research findings go on to show that the amount of CO2 per passenger will only decrease further because of the UK’s environmental policies on reducing carbon dioxide emissions and due to more renewable energy supplies.
Further evidence of Eurostar being green is in its move of its London base from Waterloo to St Pancras. The move over to the high-speed rail link at St Pancras means that journey times have been shortened by up to twenty-two minutes, reducing the risk to the environment and making Eurostar travel even greener.
